Out-of-Body Experiences:Your Step-by-Step Path

How to Have an Out-of-Body Experience: A Free Step-by-Step Guide

Most people who have an out-of-body experience stumble into it once, by accident, and never find their way back. This free series turns that accident into a skill you can learn: a practical path from your very first relaxation session to conscious, confident exploration. No special gifts required, just curiosity, a quiet space and a willingness to practise.

The series is organised into three phases. In Foundations, you’ll learn why OBEs happen, how to move past fear, and how to keep your mind awake while your body sleeps. In Techniques, you’ll try the best-known exit methods, discover the best times to practise, and get honest help when things don’t work. In Exploration, you’ll learn to stay steady once you’re out, explore with purpose, and build a practice that lasts.

Most people who have an out-of-body experience stumble into it by accident, once, and never know how to find their way back.
This series is different. It’s a free, practical path that takes you from your very first relaxation session to conscious, confident exploration, one step at a time. No special gifts required. Just curiosity, a quiet space, and a willingness to practise.

New to the topic? You can check out our “Begin Here” page to learn what OBEs are, where the idea of training them came from, and why the U.S. Army once took them seriously.

How the Series Works

  • Follow the steps in order. Each one builds on the skills before it.
  • Read or watch. Every step has a short article and a video under 10 minutes.
  • Try it tonight. Each step ends with one simple practice you can use the same day.
  • Take your time. Some people move through a step in a night; others spend a few weeks. Both are normal.

Phase 1: Foundations

Replace fear and confusion with understanding, and learn the core skill of relaxed awareness.

  • Step 1: The Doorway You Pass Through Every Night. Why most OBEs happen at the edge of sleep, and what those strange sensations really are.
  • Step 2: Facing the Fear. The common worries, what experienced explorers say about them, and how to stay calm and curious.
  • Step 3: Mind Awake, Body Asleep. The foundation of every technique: keeping your awareness clear as your body drifts off.
  • Step 4: Intent and Memory. Setting a clear intention and keeping a journal so your experiences aren’t lost on waking.

Phase 2: Techniques

Real methods to try, and honest help when you hit the usual walls.

  • Step 5: The Vibrational State. The buzzing sensations many people feel before separation, and how to relax into them.
  • Step 6: Exit Techniques. The roll-out, the rope technique, using a target location, and more.
  • Step 7: Timing Is Everything. Why when you try matters as much as how.
  • Step 8: When It Isn’t Working. Falling asleep, a racing mind, getting stuck halfway: the common walls and what helps.

Phase 3: Exploration

Turn first experiences into a lasting practice.

  • Step 9: Staying Out and Staying Clear. How explorers steady the experience and sharpen their awareness.
  • Step 10: Exploring with Purpose. Choosing where to go, what to ask, and how to make sense of what you find.
  • Step 11: A Lifelong Practice. Building a routine that lasts, and where to go next.

Want a Guided Path?

This series teaches you the ideas and techniques. If you’d like to be guided through them with structured audio, the Gateway Experience was designed for exactly that, and it’s the program the U.S. Army once studied.

A note on safety: these practices are gentle, but if you have epilepsy, a seizure disorder or a mental health condition, check with a health professional before using deep-trance techniques or brainwave audio.
